Specialties: Humanities and social sciences, especially African American studies, archaeology, architecture, ecocriticism, literature, the region, Southern studies, U.S. and British literature, U.S. history.

The University of Virginia Press was founded in 1963 to advance the intellectual interests of the University of Virginia and other institutions of higher learning tin the state. Until 2002 the name was University Press of Virginia. John Casteen III, the university president, said the new name reflected the Press' "close relationship to its host institution."

The University of Virginia Press publishes 50 to 60 new titles annually. The backlist includes more than1,000 titles. New titles are approved by the Board of Directors after a rigorous process of peer review.

The Press focuses primarily on the humanities and social sciences with special concentrations in American history, African American studies, Southern studies, literature, ecocriticism, and regional books.

Active series include the Papers of George Washington; the Papers of James Madison; the Victorian Literature and Culture Series; CARAF Books (translations of Francophone literature); the Carter G. Woodson Institute Series in Black Studies; Under the Sign of Nature: Explorations in Ecocriticism; The American South Series; A Nation Divided: New Studies in the Civil War; Constitutionalism and Democracy; Studies in Religion and Culture; and the Virginia Bookshelf series of regional reprints.
